Hello!

I'm Blackmailchan, the creator of Cereal Soup!

I love animals, I love games, I love animal games! No formal education on game programming, just a lot of passion and dedication and a desire to do my best by my community. I'm always ready and willing to talk about my passions!

My Story

In 2014, I was destined to make an animal game. I had no prior experience with game design, no education, not even any friends who might know a thing or two about it. I went in absolutely blind, learning how to use Unity, program in javascript and C#, 3D modeling, rigging and animating with blender, and crossing my fingers everytime I hit the 'Play' button that my already falling apart laptop wasn't about to go up in flames.

By early 2015 my first public test release was ready for the public! It was... ugly. But it actually worked!

By the looks of things, very few people were supportive. I had a lot of backlash over how the game looked and played in these early stages. But that support I did get? I loved every second of it! I could only count on one hand the amount of people that believed in my project, but that was enough to keep going.

It was, for lack of a better word, annoying constantly pushing patches through my own website's Download page! I had to build for two versions of Windows, plus Mac and Linux and then put them into a .rar and upload them to a third party downloader everytime I wanted to fix a bug (which was and still is quite often). In 2018, I decided to bite the bullet and put Cereal Soup on Steam for ease of access for everyone.

It was a hard choice, because by all standards Cereal Soup is not the kind of game that Steam players would play. It's focus is on roleplay and using the chat, so many people felt it was unfinished and shouldn't be on the store.

However, I was determined to make the game as easy to access as possible for the community I'd had- the ones who put up with the excessive bugginess, downloading .rars from websites they perhaps didn't fully trust, and waited patiently every day for progress and updates. They were the people I was doing it all for, and still do it for!

In late 2020, I was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease that made living life far more difficult. Game progress had to slow down as I focused on my health. I wasn't able to focus mentally, and had to save energy for doctor's appointments. At the same time I felt like the game needed to take a few steps back from the scope so that I could rewrite and strengthen the core of the game before trying to progress further.

I did a huge re-code and completed it by May 2021, and since then I've been slowly progressing the game in terms of features. It's been a long, long, journey, and the future is a bit more murky with my health issues to consider, but I'm determined to keep going as long as I can.

Cereal Soup had and probably always will have a shaky reputation as a game. There's so much I've learned and still the road ahead is filled with mountains I need to climb. But I love working on this game, working for the community, and working on myself.
